Barrymore Blogathon – Never Been Kissed (1999)

This is the first of three posts dedicated to the Fourth Annual Barrymore Blogathon being held over at In The Good Old Days of Hollywood. Tnx Crystal for letting me take part!

“Wow, that was just like “Carrie”! I thought she was gonna kill us all. ” – Rob

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Aug 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A young reporter is sent undercover to a high school in order to try and find a scoop.

My Take on it – When trying to choose a film for this blogathon related to Drew Barrymore, I came across this film that I had heard of but had never seen.

I am so disappointed that this is the film I chose because it was pretty terrible and makes very little sense.

They try too hard here to give us a stereotypical high school experience and want to make high school feel like an 80’s film about high school and it just doesn’t work.

This film starts off feeling like a 21 Jump Street episode where someone needs to go undercover and root out some nastiness yet never seems to find a reason to do so here.

Since it has no real anchor in the story, things lose interest quite quickly and ends up becoming way too pretentious for it’s own good.

Barrymore has some great films but this is not among them at all and her character is actually quite annoying in this one which makes her pretty unbearable throughout.

The one good thing about this film is the music which is quite enjoyable. (at least something was).

This was a film that I hoped would end well before it actually does.

Bottom Line – Terrible film that makes very little sense. The try too hard to make high school seem like the best time of everyone’s lives and try to recreate it.  This starts off like a 21 Jump Street episode but loses its way quite fast and becomes too pretentious for its own good. Barrymore is unbearable in the title role and I was hoping for this one to end much earlier than it actually does.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Garry Marshall’s character is speaking to his employees at the Chicago Sun-Times board room, he says, “I don’t even know my own kids.” His real life daughter, Kathleen Marshall, is sitting to his right when he’s speaking. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (4/10)
