Number of Times Seen – 1 (15 Aug 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A young couple are hired to take a yacht across the Pacific but trouble arises when a Hurricane hits.
My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about a few months ago and was pretty interested in seeing based solely on the trailer.
They present a very interesting idea that is based on truth, but unfortunately, it just doesn’t work very well overall.
The characters don’t feel developed enough and it’s much harder to care about them due to this fact.
The cinematography is amazing to look at and they give us some spectacular views of the ocean, but overall, the story isn’t able to carry throughout the run time.
The fact that this is based on a personal account novel might be way it doesn’t translate well enough to the screen since much of what transpires probably is related much better thru written words and thoughts instead of they way that it is done here.
Many of the scenes feel recycled from other oceanic survival tales even though this is a unique kind of story.
The cast of the film is ok but none of them really manage to stand out.
I have been a fan of Shailene Woodley ever since I saw her performance in The Fault in Our Stars (2014) but what she does here is quite lackluster instead of inspirational as one would hope.
Bottom Line – Interesting idea that just doesn’t work very well. The characters don’t feel developed enough to care about what eventually will happen to them. Many of the scenes feel as if they have been recycled from other films of the same type despite the fact that this is based on a book that accounts the true tale. The cast is ok and even though I’ve been a fan of Woodley ever since The Fault in Our Stars (2014), her performance here is pretty lackluster instead of inspiring.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Over 90% of the movie was filmed at sea. Some days began at 4 a.m., with a two-hour boat ride from land. A daily shoot could last up to 12 hours, with no land in sight. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
