Number of Times Seen – 2 (9 Feb 2008 and 16 Aug 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A group of prisoners in a Concentration Camp are used by the Nazis in order to create counterfeit currency to help finance the war.
My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing not long after it was seen as the front runner for winning the Best Foreign language film at the Oscars.
As a fan of history and always wanting to learn more and more about stories of the Holocaust, this film is gripping from start to finish and gives us a very interesting tale.
How much of the story is fact is unknown, but the general idea is based on things that happened.
They manage to present to us the hardships that these prisoners faced while in the Concentration Camps, but also allow us to see how the impending loss of the war applied even more pressure to the Nazi guards as they tried to find ways to help and fund the war efforts despite the loses they suffered.
This film definitely deserved it’s win at the Oscars for Best Foreign language Film even if it isn’t perfect because they do manage to keep things interesting and gripping the whole time.
The prologue and epilogue are both done well enough to show the lasting effects that such a story can have on someone’s life.
Bottom Line – Great story that is told quiet well. I’m not sure how much of the story is true yet it still works really well the entire time. They manage to show the hardships in the Camps while also showing the way that the Nazis are becoming nervous about the war effort as they begin to lose the war. Definitely deserved to win the Oscar for Best Foreign language fIlm that year even if the film isn’t perfect because it does give us such a gripping tale. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Some experts believe the real-life counterfeit pounds were thwarted by nothing more than common courtesy. Honest Britons picked the airdropped bills off the street and turned them over to the police, averting a financial disaster. (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10)
