The Assignment (1997)

“What did Darth Vader say to Luke Skywalker? Come over to the dark side. Come over, Annibal. You have no idea of the power we have.” – Jack Shaw

Number of Times Seen – 2 (23 Jun 2000 and 19 Aug 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A naval Officer is recruited by the CIA to try and stop the terrorist Carlos after they find out that they both look exactly alike.

My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing years ago and enjoyed a lot.

I have always been fascinated by real life spy stories and this one hits just about everything on the mark.

They manage to keep the story interesting and intriguing the entire time while also constantly giving us valuable insight into the real world of espionage and how intelligence operatives must act when dealing with sensitive operations.

The cats is great and Aidan Quinn, Donald Sutherland and Ben Kingsley all work so well together that we get a sense of realism from the story.

The fact that this is based on a real event helps add to the suspense of it all because we know that a lot of what we are watching truly happened despite the fact that there are obvious embellishments of the story.

Liked the trick of explaining things to characters so that the audience can also get a better understanding of everything going on.

They also show us some great counter-intelligence tactics that show how important and dangerous this kind of job can truly be especially in a world where there are people who constantly wish to wreck havoc thru terror on the masses any chance that they get.

Bottom Line – Interesting and intriguing tale that gives us much insight into the way these kind of intelligence operatives work.  Great cast led by Quinn, Sutherland and Kingsley. The fact that this story is based on a real incident adds so much to the suspense because despite a few embellishments, we know that a lot of what occurs really took place.  They do a great job explaining everything to us under the guise of needing to explain things to the characters themselves which helps understand what is truly going on at all times. Some of the tactics used here are quite impressive and show how important counter intelligence needs to be in a world filled with some people trying to cause terror every step of the way. Recommended!
