The Bachelor (1999)

“It’s a wonderful thing, as time goes by, to be with someone who looks into your face, when you’ve gotten old, and still sees what you think you look like. ” – Priest

Number of Times Seen – At least 5 times (18 Jan 2001, DVD, video and 22 Aug 2018)

Brief Synopsis – The heir of a fortune has a day to get married in order to inherit the money or else it will all be lost.

My Take on it – This is a film that I have always enjoyed ever since I saw it for the first time.

It takes a somewhat familiar premise and manages to find a way to present it in a very enjoyable way.

Chris O’Donnell is perfect cast in the lead and manages to make us both sympathize and slightly despite his character based on his actions and motivations, he also keeps things very fun by the light way that he portrays his character.

This film takes a subject matter that is somewhat glossed over in most films and gives us a brutally honest perspective on the idea of potential marriage and they allow us to see how such a story could play out.

The supporting cast of this film is also great and Rene Zellweger, Artie Lange, Hal Holbrook, Ed Asner, Brook Shields and James Cromwell all give wonderful performances here.

Love the way that this film present analogies for the ideas of marriage and dating despite the fact that it is uses much generalization for it all.

Bottom Line – Interesting premise that works quite well largely due to the cats and the setting. O’Donnell is perfectly cast in the lead and helps keep things enjoyable and fun the whole time. The brutal honesty of the film is great and they allow us to see how such a story can be played out.  The supporting cast is great with Zellweger, Lange, Holbrook, Asner, Shields and Cromwell all do wonderful jobs here.  The premise isn’t completely unique but they found a very enjoyable way to present it which makes it interesting the entire time. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Several of the brides chasing the bachelor at the end of this movie are male extras in drag. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
