Doctor Detroit (1983)

“Do you have any idea how college faculty members eat? On what we get paid, a free meal is like honey to a bear to these people! They’re going to want to eat enough to hibernate on! They’re animals! ” – Clifford

Number of Times Seen – Twice (Cable in the 80’s and 4 Sep 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A stuffy university professor masquerades as a high rolling pimp in order to try and stop a ruthless underworld leader in Chicago.

My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing at least once on cable and not really understanding what it was all about.

Having rewatched it, I can still say the same thing even after 30+ years.

This film’s plot and storyline is terrible and there is nothing worthwhile in this film to make it worth a glance besides for the fact that it stars Dan Aykroyd and Howard Hesseman.

I’m still in shock that Aykroyd actually wrote this film’s script and truly believed it would be a hit.

The plot itself is extremely silly and makes little sense and there is no way that it comes across as believable or even funny for that matter.

The fact that Aykroyd believed in this film enough to start writing a sequel says so much about his misplaced enthusiasm for such a storyline tho and I wonder if he still believes after 3 and half decades that this film’s plot is actually an interesting or even enjoyable one.

Bottom Line – Terrible, terrible film that has almost nothing going for it besides the names of its two stars. I’m shocked that Aykroyd actually wrote this drivel and helped get it made. This film’s plot is extremely silly and nothing works to make any of this story believable or even humorous for that matter. Love the fact that Aykroyd truly believed in his work tho and even thought a sequel could be made that would also do well in the theater. (see Trivia section below)

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The end of the film promises “Doctor Detroit II, the Wrath of Mom” which was in the works. In fact, Dan Aykroyd was writing the script. But when this film turned out to be a box office bomb, Universal pulled the plug. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
