Joseph Cotten Blogathon – The Oscar (1966)

This is the final of three posts dedicated to The Joseph Cotten Blogathon being held over at Maddy Loves Her Classic Films and In The Good Old Days of Hollywood.

Tnx Maddy and Crystal for letting me take part!

“[narrating] Man, he wanted to swallow Hollywood like a cat with a canary. And he did it! The parts got bigger, and Frankie was hooked! Like a junkie shooting pure quicksilver into his veins, Frankie got turned on by the wildest narcotic known to man: success! The parts got bigger and bigger… Frankie got hungrier and hungrier. ” – Hymie

Brief Synopsis – An aspiring film star climbs the ladder of stardom to the top and isn’t even satisfied when he receives an Oscar nomination.

My Take on it – Wen I was searching for a film to watch for this blogathon, I saw the title of this film and couldn’t resist choosing it.

AS a fan of the yearly Oscar ceremony, I hoped that this film would live up to my expectations, but unfortunately it falls very short of that mark.

This isn’t a bad idea per se since it is well known that Hollywood is a dog eat dog world, but the way that it is presented is completely over the top with very poorly acted performances all around.

The storyline has some crazy aspects to it that make little sense and could have been excised quite easily.

I had hoped that this film would give us a much deeper perspective on the internal Hollywood conflicts relating to the prestigious award, yet it doesn’t manage to do so at all.

Th cats of this film is completely wasted and even great actors like Joseph Cotten, Steven Boyd and Milton Berle are not able to give anywhere close to their best performances of their careers in this film.

Bottom Line – Terrible film about the industry largely due to the very over the top performances and some of the contrived aspects of the storyline.  As a fan of the Oscar ceremony, I was looking forward to something much deeper and I only hope that the novel this is based on does a better job then they managed to do here.  The cast is wasted including Cotten.
