Hyde Park on the Hudson (2012)

“We think they see all our flaws. But, that’s not what they are looking to find when they look to us.” – FDR

Number of Times Seen – 1 (6 Sep 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A love affair buds between the President of the US and his distant cousin while on holiday in New York.

My Take on it – I’m usually a fan of Presidential films, but this one was just too crazy for me.

Bill Murray is a great actor, but he just wasn’t the best casting choice for the role of FDR.

He makes this film feel more comical than dramatic which takes away so much from any kind of impact that this story should have.

The relationship between Murray and Laura Linney just doesn’t work on any level and that largely has to do with the fact that the chemistry between the two is almost non-existent throughout the film.

It’s so hard to believe that any of this film is based on fact which is quite a shame since I love Presidential film and this isn’t a very good one.

The main storyline features a casual meeting between FDR and the King and Queen of England George and Elisabeth but things are far from perfect in the way all of them are portrayed and this film seems to try too hard to make the royals seem very inept and self conscious the entire time which is quite strange and doesn’t feel right at all.

Bottom Line – Not even close to being one of the best movies about a past US President. Murray is very miscast in the role of FDR and makes things seem much more comical than they should be. The relationship portrayed between the two main characters doesn’t work very well especially since Murray and Linney have so little chemistry together. The storyline featuring the meeting of the Roosevelts with the King and Queen of England is far from perfect and they try too hard to make the royals feel very inept and self conscious which doesn’t feel right at all.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The gag about the antique anti-U.K. political cartoons is based on truth. These historic cartoons are located in the foyer of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s home, King George VI viewed them them upon arriving in the foyer, and made a brief humorous remark to FDR about the cartoons. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
