Number of Times Seen – 1 (6 Sep 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A farmer and his wife, intent on making it, do all they can to work their farm into a successful endeavor.
My Take on it – This is a film that I had never heard of before yet was quite interested in seeing largely due to the fact that this was Director jean Renoir’s sole Oscar nomination as Director.
I loved his film The Grand Illusion (1937) and hoped that this film would be as griping and entertaining.
This film gives us a very interesting, yet very simplistic view of the life of an aspiring farmer as he tries to work his own land and become self sufficient instead of relying on payment from others for his work.
The farmer and his family are in constant struggles, and the hardships that they face are never trivial, yet through perseverance, they somehow manage to keep at it since this is their dream.
The story arc itself works quite well and it all seems quite realistic in the portrayal of life as a farmer and the ups and downs of such a profession due to natural and unnatural reasons.
There is no question about the fact that Renoir put this film together really well and was quite deserving of his Oscar nomination for this work.
Bottom Line – Interesting, yet simplistic look at the life of a struggling farmer and his family. We get to see the hardships of the family over the years but their perseverance over that time shows how dedicated they are to having their own farmland in order to support themselves properly. The story arc works quite well and it all seems quite realistic the entire time. Renoir received an Oscar nomination (his sole nomination) for this film and I can definitely understand why. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Based on the novel “Hold Autumn in your Hand”, by George Sessions Perry, which won the first National Book Award in 1941. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
