Avalanche (1978)

“You’re like the weather, you just happen.” – Caroline Brace

Number of Times Seen – 1 (12 Sep 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A group of vacationers in a remote and exclusive resort must find a way to survive after an avalanche buries them all deep within the snow.

My Take on it – This is a truly terrible disaster film that doesn’t manage to keep things interesting at all.

Despite the fact that this kind of genre always drew famous actors into key roles, none of the ones chosen for this one have anything to do besides stand around and whine.

One would think that Rock Hudson, Robert Forster or even Mia Farrow would have read the script before signing on to this turkey.

None of the characters are developed at all and they all feel very stereotypical and superficial which is only good if one wants to have the urge to wish they don’t survive and instead expire in some ingenious manner.

Th special effects of this film are atrocious and they make any scene that should be thrilling look even more comedic or humorous than they should be largely due to the lackluster way that this are presented here.

The irony of this film’s premise is the fact that it chooses to try and go the route of environmentalism as the way to fight off capitalistic ventures which seems very laughable by the way that this presents it all to us.

Bottom Line – Terrible terrible film that is so boring to watch. This is such a generic disaster film and we don’t get a chance to really care about any of the characters because they all feel very superficial without developing them at all. Like most disaster films of the 70’s this film has some very famous actors playing important parts yet have little to nothing to really do.  The special effects are truly horrendous and nothing thrilling happens at all since more of the scenes come across as seeming quite humorous by the way they are presented.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – During filming, the special effects crew used Styrofoam to augment the “snow effects” of the avalanche. Once the spring thaw hit, Stryrofoam was discovered all over the Durango. By then, the company was long gone (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
