Number of Times Seen – 2 (16 Nov 2010 and 20 Sep 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A music producer falls in love with a journalist but can their romance survive the fact that they live on opposite coasts of the US.
My Take on it – This is a film that I saw not long after it came out yet didn’t recall anything about it besides the two leads.
The premise itself is actually a great one but it just doesn’t work here well enough because they seem to try much too hard to make this film as raunchy as possible which takes so much away from the romantic aspects of the film.
Justin Long and Drew Barrymore have horrendous chemistry in this film and it’s quite difficult to actually believe that they are in a relationship let alone madly in love with one another.
The friends of the couple are meant to be fun sidekicks, but all of them feel like stereotypical movie friends that don’t add or subtract to the enjoyment of the film.
They are meant to be funny, but they come across as overbearing instead especially Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis who are both much more talented than their performances here make them out to be.
This is all quite unfortunate since the idea is one that could be explored in a much more profound way if given the right story.
Bottom Line – Interesting premise, but they try too hard to make this storyline raunchy that it tales away from the romantic aspects of the story. The chemistry between Long and Barrymore is horrendous and it’s so hard to actually believe that they are actually in a relationship let alone madly in love. The acquaintances of the two main characters are very stereotypical and don’t help the story move along at all especially since they aren’t funny enough as sidekicks.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Justin Long’s character says he has a middle seat when leaving the check in/ticket counter. The airline he is flying is Southwest, which is not assigned seating. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
