Brief Synopsis – Two patrons at an evening show cause much havoc.
My Take on it – Charlie Chaplin was known as the master of slapstick comedy of his time and even after more than a century, his humoristic look at events still rings true and funny.
This film is further proof as to how much of a comic genius he was and that his talent is still unsurpassed.
This short film is hilarious from stat to finish as he allows us to see some great scenes that are truly laugh out loud funny.
The decision to play dual roles works really well for Chaplin since each of the two plays a completely different yet essential purpose.
Each manages to cause different kinds of trouble for both the audience and performers on stage the entire time.
This film gives us some great classic Chaplin hilarity as he tangles with a wide range of characters that include, a fat lady, an orchestra, people in the first and second rows of the show and of course the view from a balcony seats.
The slapstick used in this film is great and there is so much to laugh at even if the film is only 20+ minutes long.
My two favorites scenes of this film are the water hose one and the one featuring the fat lady near the fountain.
Chaplin was able to take simple situations that we can all relate to and make them funny to watch over and over again.
Bottom Line – Hilarious Chaplin film that helps prove how talented he was. The dual roles work really well and both manage to cause much trouble with the audience and performers along the way. We get some classic Chaplin hilarity that includes some of the comic slapstick that he was always known for. The run-in with the fat lady and the water hose scenes are the best, but every moment of this short film is really fun to watch. Recommended!
