The Children Act (2017)

“Life is more precious than dignity.” – Fiona May

Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Sep 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A British judge must decide the fate of a teenager with Leukemia while also dealing with the fact that her marriage is falling apart around her.

My Take on it – This is a film that I knew nothing about before seeing it and based on the synopsis, it actually sounded quite compelling.

Unfortunately, the way that it is presented takes so much away from the story.

This film has so much more potential because the premise is extremely interesting yet this idea is squandered time and again as the film moves along.

The story itself veers into very strange territory more often than not and they end up leaving too many of the intriguing questions completely unanswered which is quite frustrating because it happens very often here.

The cast is very talented but both Stanley Tucci and Emma Thompson feel wasted in this film because they aren’t given enough to do.

Even the way that these characters try to find reconciliation is done halfheartedly and doesn’t feel as sincere as it should.

The novel that this film is based on is probably much more interesting because they are able to explain things so much better on paper via a narrative that is virtually impossible to do on screen.

The fact that the author of the novel, Ian McEwan, adapted his novel for the screen shows that even he couldn’t choose what should be excised since too much of the storyline is left open ended and lacking over and over.

Bottom Line – Film with so much more potential that is squandered throughout. Thompson and Tucci are both great actors but they aren’t given enough to work with here. The story moves in strange directions and leaves way too many interesting questions unanswered.  The novel that this is based on probably manages to explain things much better, but the adaptation to the screen is quite lacking and leaves too much open ended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Film is based on the 2014 novel of the same name written by Ian McEwan, who also wrote the script for the film. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
