“She ain’t no woman, she’s just Olive.” – Popeye
Number of Times Seen – 1 (26 Sep 2018)
Brief Synopsis – Popeye, Bluto, Olive and Sweet Pea go on a journey across the Ocean to find Popeye’s long lost father.
My Take on it – When Steve announced this blogathon a few months ago, I was intrigued to see what this film would be able to add to the knowledge that I already had of the story of Popeye and his friends.
As a kid, I used to really enjoy watching the cartoon and the music of Popeye would always bring cheers to my lips.
My older brother loved Popeye so much that he requested that our mother buy him raw spinach so he could be as strong as the sailor man, but ended up hating the new food.
The story that is told here is an interesting one, but it unfortunately doesn’t bring anything really new or intriguing to the concept that is already Popeye canon.
Overall, this story just feels average and could be a regular episode of the tales of the spinach eating sailor we all know and love.
The voice cast of this film is quite good and they are able to recapture the essence of the cartoon that I use to be quite a fan of.
Kathy Bates is a great addition to the cast and her character stands out among them all.
The animation is done quite well and this is a great way to bring the look and feel of this story to the 21st Century.
Bottom Line – Interesting idea that comes across as being just an average Popeye story. The voice cast is quite good and they do manage to bring back the feelings of old while capturing the essence of the cartoon that I would watch in my youth. The animation is done really well and updates things quite nicely despite it all. Kathy Bates is a great addition to the cast and her character stands out among the rest.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – After his initial day doing the scratchy voice of Popeye, Billy West’s throat hurt so bad, that upon returning to his hotel room, he had to drink honey to relax his voice. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)

Thanks for bringing this to the blogathon! I’ve always been curious about this special, so now I’ll have to seek it out. I didn’t even know Kathy Bates participating in this — what voice did she do?

Interesting. I wasn’t aware of this modern day feature. Might be good filler.
