Brief Synopsis – A waiter gets into trouble in a restaurant and then pretends to be a count at a lavish party that includes roller skating.
My Take on it – I have been a Charlie Chaplin fan for decades and every chance that I get, I like finding new films of hos (long or short that are enjoyable to watch.
This short film of 20+ minutes isn’t among the best of his work yet it still allows us to see his famous character chase and be chased as the situation allows for it.
The antics that he pulls in this film range from making one smile, to laugh out loud to hilarious.
His skills on roller skates are superb and the scenes in this film that allow him to show off his talent are great because we get t see hos character weaves in and out of crowds while being chased and obviously we get to see some funny repercussions of said antics.
The story itself isn’t that memorable yet it allows us to once again see his famous persona do some very funny and lively things that will make us laugh.
The fact that the story is very weak here doesn’t take away from the fact that very few people watch Chaplin shorts for the stories (obviously his full length features are a completely different case, especially The Great Dictator (1940) and his other classics.) but rather to try and see what kind of laughable situations this character manages to somehow get himself involved in which will make us laugh and enjoy the moment.
Bottom Line – Not among Chaplin’s best films, but he still manages to entertain with his antics. The skills that he had on roller skates is quite fun to watch as he weaves in and out of a crowd while being pursued. The story itself is very reminiscent of other Chaplin shorts, but these are not the kind of films people watch for the story but rather for the laughable situations that this character is able to get into no matter what he does or where he finds himself.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The movie is best known for showcasing Charles Chaplin’s roller skating skills. (From IMDB)
