Downhill (1927)

“Here is a tale of two school-boys who made a pact of loyalty. One of them kept it – at a price.” – Title Card

Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 Oct 2018)

Brief Synopsis – After covering for his friend who got a local girl “in trouble”, a young man from a wealthy family must live with his decision even if it means having to live a life of poverty.

My Take on it – In my attempt to watch all of Alfred Hitchcock’s films, I decided to finally tackle the final one from the silent era.

I knew nothing about this film before watching it and the story itself is quite a simple one yet must have been seen at the time it was made as being quite controversial due to some of the themes that are explored here.

The story itself tho is quite uneven and doesn’t flow very well which takes away so much from the enjoyment of watching a film made by the master (even if it was before people understood that fact.)

The story jumps around too much along the way and too often takes part of the story to extremes.

The main theme of loyalty and friendship isn’t explored deeply enough and had it been, this film might have been even more enjoyable to view.

The characters are so undeveloped and parts of the story seem like they try to cop out in order to try and make life seem so fair and balanced which also makes the story feel too tame especially given some of the themes touched upon.

Not even close to being among one of Hitchcock’s best films.

Bottom Line – Very interesting early Hitchcock film that doesn’t work that well because it doesn’t have a story that flows smoothly along. The story jumps around too much and takes thing to extremes too often. The story itself is a very simple, yet for its time must have been considered quite controversial due to the themes they try to explore. Not one of Hitchcock’s best films.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In the first scene when Roddy catches the ball, he is holding the sides of it, but in the next shot, he is holding the top and bottom of it. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
