Company of Heroes (2013)

“[Sniffing the air in the offices] Stinking Nazis.” – Brent Willoughby

Number of Times Seen – 2 (28 Feb 2013 and 4 Oct 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A squad of American soldiers during the Battle of the Bulge get caught behind enemy lines and discover a secret weapon being developed by the Germans.

My Take on it – This is a a film that I saw a few years ago and was interested in rewatching in order to refresh my memory of it.

The story is based on a video game featuring American soldiers fighting during World War II and they do a nice job adapting it to a feature length storyline.

They do a great job showing the chaotic nature of the Battle itself on both sides as the soldiers on both sides just wanted to war to finally have it end.

The action scenes are quite enjoyable to watch and we get to see some heroic actions by character who want to just return to their normal lives back home.

The cast is filled with unknown actors which helps make it feel even more realistic.

The poster for the film lists 4 known actors as the stars yet 3 of them have what could be classified as glorified cameos in the film and Tom Sizemore plays the kind of role that he always excelled at; an important supporting character.

The film is done quite realistically as even though it isn’t based on fact, it works quite well as a World War II action film.

Bottom Line – Enjoyable video game adaptation that tells an interesting story of how chaotic things were during the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. The actions works quite well and we get to see ordinary men do heroic things in the attempt to try and end the war as quickly as possible in order to return home. The cast is mostly unfamiliar which helps the realism of the story.  The poster lists 4 actors as the stars, but 3 are glorified cameos and Sizemore does fill the role of an important supporting character quite well.  The action is great to watch and it all seems quite realistic in the way things play out. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In 2001, Neal McDonough played Lt. Buck Compton in the HBO WW2 miniseries Band of Brothers (2001). It was set in the same time frame and he played an army officer that fought in the Battle of the Bulge. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
