Number of Times Seen – Twice (Cable in the 90’s and 10 Oct 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A detective’s mother comes to visit and turns his life upside down.
My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing on cable one night when I was bored over 25 years ago.
I didn’t remember much about it besides the gun washing scene and decided to give it a shot to see if it’s any good at all.
This was a really bad film and the reason I didn’t recall anything about it is largely due to the fact that it’s pretty unmemorable because the whole film’s premise is quite silly and doesn’t manage to work on any level.
Sylvester Stallone is completely miscast in this comedy and his character seems so unreal it’s actually painful.
Estelle Getty was always hilarious in the TV show The Golden Girls, but the role she plays in this film of the overbearing mother is largely just too much.
There are some scenes where she has her moments but overall she overdoes it with this character and instead of seeming endearing, she comes across as very annoying.
I’m still in shock that actors (even someone like Stallone) would actually choose to want to be in a film like this. (see Trivia section below).
Even the title shouts stay away!!!!
Bottom Line – Terrible film with a really silly premise that doesn’t manage to work on any level. Stallone is atrocious in the comedic role and doesn’t manage to make this character seem real at all. Getty has her moments as the overbearing mother, but overall, she overdoes it and gets annoying quite quickly. I truly can’t believe that Stallone agreed to be a part of this film. (see Trivia section below)
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were competing against each other at that time, and Schwarzenegger faked interest in this movie in order to make Stallone audition for it. Stallone, who heard that Schwarzenegger was interested in headlining in this movie, immediately dropped everything and contacted the producers, saying that he wanted to headline. He deeply regrets this. (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
