The 12th Man (2017)

“Eleven.  Where is the twelfth man?” – Kurt Stage

Number of Times Seen – 1 (14 Oct 2018)

Brief Synopsis – After their mission fails, a group of saboteurs are captured by the Nazi’s, but one manages to escape and must try and get to safety before he is also caught and executed.

My Take on it –  This is a film that I had never heard of before watching and the premise itself immediately drew me in.

The story that they tell is all about bravery; of soldiers and of civilians alike who will do all that they can to try and stop their oppressors from capturing a lone man on his way across Norway to the safety of Sweden.

The cast of this film is filled with largely unknown actors and that actually helps make this feel even more realistic in everything that they do.

The cold weather environment is depicted really well and it looks so cold onscreen that it’s easy to transport oneself to that barren landscape and feel the chill of the weather.

Jonathan Rhys-Meyers and Thomas Gullestad are both superb in the lead roles and their cat and mouse game is so interesting to watch because we can easily see the levels of suspense rise little by little as things move along.

Bottom Line – Very interesting unknown tale of bravery of not just a soldier but of the native Norwegians who did all they could to try and ensure his safety. The cast is largely filled with unknowns yet that actually helps the story feel even more realistic. The cold weather environment is replicated extremely well and just watching some of the scenes makes the viewer feel the cold weather depicted. Rhys-Meyers and Gullestad are both superb in this film as they play a cat and mouse game across the barren and cold landscape of Norway. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Preparing for the role of Jan Baalsrud, Thomas Gullestad practiced looking cold in front of a mirror. After filming, Thomas admitted during a radio interview that it was not necessary. Looking cold came very naturally while filming as it was, in fact, very cold. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
