Green Zone (2010)

“At least tell me how it happened. How does this happ… how does someone like you write something that’s not true? Tell me.” – Miller

Number of Times Seen – Twice (3 Nov 2010 and 14 Oct 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A soldier in Iraq not long after the invasion who is fed up with received false intelligence on enemy weapons tries to find them on his own.

My Take on it – This film has an interesting premise yet fails to keep things enjoyable and poignant throughout because of too much political jargon.

Ultimately this is a slightly above average film that wants to show how unorganized the invasion of Iraq was and remains tat way even after nearly two decades which is still hampering the US from finding a way to extract itself from the conflict.

The thing that works quite well here is showing the story largely from the viewpoint of a regular soldier (played by Matt Damon) who is willing to do all he can to try and finish the mission despite the fact that he knows the odds are against him the whole time.

He remains patriotic throughout and does all he can to try and ensure the safety of his men and of civilians even though he is constantly aware of the fact that danger is all around him.

Paul Greenglass is an expert at making films like this one and once again succeeds in keeping things as suspenseful as possible along the way.

Bottom Line – Slightly above average film that once again proves how unorganized the entire Iraqi invasion was and why after nearly two decades, the US still can’t find a way to extract themselves from the conflict. The thing that works well here is the use of a soldier seeing the truth in order to be both patriotic and lead him men away from danger. Greenglass knows how to make these kind of films suspenseful and he once again succeeds in that field. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Many of the soldiers in Matt Damon’s WMD unit were actual Iraq War and Afghanistan War veterans, not actors. Damon said his biggest challenge was knowing he was an actor who was giving orders to actual soldiers. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
