Comes a Horseman (1978)

You know lady, you got balls the size of grapefruits.– Buck Athearn

Number of Times Seen – 1 (15 Oct 2018)

Brief Synopsis – The daughter of a rancher must find a way to fend off a neighboring rancher who wants to buy up all of the land in the area.

My Take on it – This is a film that I knew absolutely nothing about before watching it and the fact that it has a great cast was reason enough to look forward to what they have in store for us.

Unfortunately, this film wasn’t very enjoyable at all.

I was bored pretty quickly with the storyline and the way things were playing out and the fact that it moves at a snail’s pace doesn’t help those kind of feelings.

The characters aren’t developed well and remain quite superficial and uninteresting to watch as they plod through a slow movie pointless story that fails to engage the audience at all.

Jane Fonda, James Caan and Jason Robards are all great actors, but they don’t really have much to do and feel wasted in most of the scenes that they appear in.

The only interesting character is played by Richard Farnsworth who deservingly received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his work here.

The choice to have this story as a Western that occurs immediately after World War II is an interesting idea, yet just doesn’t seem to work here as a way of enhancing this kind of story.

Ironically, this was his very first acting role since he had a long career as a stuntman for decades beforehand.

Bottom Line – Pretty boring film that moves along at a snail’s pace. The characters aren’t very interesting to watch and the story itself is not very engaging at all. The cast is quite talented, but they aren’t really given enough to do.  The three main actors in this film (Fonda, Caan and Robards) all seem completely wasted in this story.  Farnsworth is the best thing about this film (and that’s not saying much) and he was deservingly nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in this film.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Before becoming an actor Richard Farnsworth was a stuntman for over 40-years and had doubled for Jane Fonda’s father Henry Fonda. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
