Rambo III (1988)

“Are you insane? One man against trained commandos… Who do you think this man is? God? ” – Zaysen

Number of Times Seen – Twice (Theater in ’88 and 17 Oct 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Rambo is recruited to go on a dangerous mission to Russian-held Afghanistan in order to free a friend.

My Take on it – Another film that tries to show what kind of action hero Rambo can be even if the film has a very flimsy plot.

The story is quite laughable and after 30 years, it’s actually quite ironic that it depicts the Russian occupation in Afghanistan as a bad thing that no nation should try to do (too bad no lessons were learned by the US Government over the past 17 years.)

This film is filled with political babble and its interesting to see the context that it is in because of the major changes on the world political stage in the 3 decades since.

This film is filled with excessive violence that tries to show what kind of hero Rambo is and it comes across as being extremely laughable since it is all over the top in the way it depicts this cartoonish violence between Rambo and the bad guys

That being said, this film also helped the character of Rambo be elevated to an iconic pop culture and movie character because of the depiction of him as the hero who no one can touch no matter how hard the try or how large an army he has to fight against.

Bottom Line – Terrible film that is even more ironic after 30 years than it was when it came out. The political babble in this film about how the Russians oppress the Afghani’s who are only fighting because they are being occupied is interesting within the context of what has occurred in the 3 decades since this film was made. The excessive amount of Rambo-esque violence is also funny to watch because it takes things to such an unrealistic place that has helped elevate this character to iconic levels

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – With its 63 million dollar budget, this was the most expensive film ever made at the time of its release. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
