Number of Times Seen – 1 (22 Oct 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A farmer and his try battle the odds as they try to make their farm profitable despite many hardships.
My Take on it – This is a film that I had no desire to ever see because it just didn’t sound very interesting but the fact that Jessica Lange was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for this performance made me decide to give it a try.
The premise as it plays out is an intriguing one but it probably worked much better when it came out than it does now.
Both Lange and co-star Sam Shepard are pretty good and realistic here as the leads but the story doesn’t have enough to offer and meanders along too slowly throughout.
Lange give a very strong performance and I can understand why she would be able to garner a Best Actress nomination for this role because she is the glue that does all she can to keep her family together despite all of the hardships that they need to face both natural and unnatural.
This film manages to show the various hardships and difficulties that farmers had to deal with during the economic downfall of the early 1980’s.
They show things in a very one sided way yet that helps to garner more sympathy for the characters as they continue to struggle.
Bottom Line – Intriguing premise that probably worked much better when it came out. Lange and Shepard are both quite good here but the story meanders along too slowly. They do a nice job showing the various hardships that farmers had to deal with during an economic down and this can be seen as a film that tries to show things as they are. The story is very one sided which helps the characters gain lots of sympathy. Lange was nominated for a Best ACtress Oscar for this role and plays the mother trying to hold her family together in spite of the various difficulties they face.
