The Lovely Bones (2009)

“There was one thing my murderer didn’t understand; he didn’t understand how much a father could love his child. ” – Susie Salmon

Number of Times Seen – 2 (7 Jan 2010 and 5 Nov 2018)

Brief Synopsis – The spirit of a young girl who was brutally kidnapped and murdered watches over the world she lived in hoping that her killer will be captured but also hoping that her family can find a way to heal themselves and move forward,

My Take on it – This is a film that, on the one hand, is not easy to watch due to the subject matter but on the other hand it is visually fascinating which makes it so interesting.

They manage to take such an intriguing premise and present it in a realistic fashion that despite the supernatural undertones still seems plausible and possible.

This is a story filled with lots of complexities and they work quite well because we get to see the dual planes of existence simultaneously which enhances our understanding of things going on..

Saoirse Ronan is superbly cast in the lead role  and helps make us believe this story because she is able to keep us interested throughout.

The sympathy that she is able to get for her character is perfectly done in a way that we care so much about what she cares about even when she is only an observer from a different plane of existence.

The entire supporting cast helps keep things down to Earth and that in turn makes the story so much more relatable and understandable to the viewer.

The obvious standout among the cast is Stanley Tucci as the creepy neighbor with a dark secret.

He was able to garner Best Supporting Actor nominations for this role at the Oscars, Globes, BAFTA’s and SAG Awards that year bit lost every one of them to Christoph Waltz due to his performance in Inglorious Basterds (2009)

Bottom Line – Great film that takes a very interesting premise and presents it so well.  The complexities of the way that the story is told work so well from a visual perspective because we get to see both planes of existence simultaneously.  Ronan is superb in the lead role and is able to carry the story and sympathy of her character so well throughout. The supporting cast also do a great job helping us to fully understand the story.  Tucci is the obvious standout as the creepy neighbor who tries to keep a low profile so that no one will discover his secret.  He was very deserving of Oscar, Globes, BAFTA and SAG nominations for Best Supporting Actor for this role but lost all to Christoph Waltz’s performance in Inglorious Basterds (2009). Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – For his role as George Harvey, Stanley Tucci had his skin lightened, his chest and arm hair dyed to match his blondish-brown comb-over wig, and wore false teeth to alter his jaw line. He also wore blue contact lenses and a lentil-filled fat suit to widen his girth, all topped off with square-frame eyeglasses, a fake mustache and sideburns. Since Tucci was uncomfortable playing a child molester, he wanted to alter his appearance for the role as much as possible. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
