The Ugly Truth (2009)

“So there you have it. Never assume a girl is easy or assume she’s a prude. There are many layers in between, and it’s your job, gentlemen, to peel back those layers and figure out exactly what type of woman you’re dealing with.” – Mike

Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 Nov 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A Morning TV show producer meets her match when a new talent who has very clear and blunt ideas about relationships is hired for the show.

My Take on it – Since my wife is a HUGE fan of the TV show Grey’s Anatomy, I decided to surprise her with another movie featuring one of that shows actors who left the venue in order to try and make it as a movie star.

This is a pretty fun romantic comedy that works on numerous levels but largely due to the amazing chemistry between the two leads; Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl.

Their banter is presented so perfectly that it isn’t difficult to assume that these are real people bickering back and forth.

The situations that these characters are placed in range from cute to hilarious but they almost all work which is rare in this carbon copy genre.

The premise of having a love guru help someone else find love isn’t a new concept, yet they manage to find a way that this at least feels fresh in the methods used.

Heigl is pretty good here and this film was a step in the right direction for her to try and achieve film stardom, but it dodn’t really work for her like with some other actor and actresses in the past who made the transition much more smoothly.

Bottom Line – Fun rom-com that works because of the great chemistry between Butler and Heigl. The situations that these characters are constantly pit in range from cute to hilarious but they almost all work. The premise of having a guru help out someone with dating expertise isn’t new, but the way it is presented here feels quite fresh. Heigl is pretty good here but her transition to film isn’t as smooth as she probably would have hoped for after leaving a successful TV show, but this film is a step in the right direction. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – After wrestling with the Jell-O twins, Gerard Butler ad-libbed the line “I can still taste you. You know what I mean.” (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
