“Where is this love? I can’t see it, I can’t touch it. I can’t feel it. I can hear it. I can hear some words, but I can’t do anything with your easy words. ” – Alice
Number of Times Seen – Twice (12 Apr 2006 and 11 Nov 2018)
Brief Synopsis – Four people living in London have their lives turned upside down when two of them meet and start an affair.
My Take on it – This is a movie that seems based on the premise only to be one that might be interesting since it dives into the private lives of two couples and lets us see what happens when those lives are disrupted.
Unfortunately, it just doesn’t work well enough to be entertaining.
The cats is superb and with the likes of Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Natalie Portman and Clive Owen that is to be expected but none of them are able to shine with the roles they are given.
The storyline itself gets too complicated and confusing due to the way things are presented and that takes away from any kind of enjoyment that it might have given.
None of the characters are sympathetic enough for the viewer to really care about what will happen to them and that also takes so much away from any impact the story might have.
The dialogue is witty and crisp at certain points but even that can’t help save this film from the very messy storyline that no longer is interesting even after a short while.
Bottom Line – Interesting idea that just doesn’t work well enough. The cast is superb but the way that the story is presented just makes things too confusing. None of the characters feel sympathetic enough and there is little reason to care about any of them or what will happen as the story moves along. The dialogue is crisp and sometimes witty but even that can’t make up for the messiness of the plot.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – At the beginning of filming, Natalie Portman gave Julia Roberts a necklace that said “c*nt” in honor of their characters’ foul mouths. At the end of filming, Roberts gave Portman a necklace that said “lil’ c*nt”. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
