Ali (2001)

“Don King talks black, lives white and thinks green. ” – Belinda

Number of Times Seen – Twice (28 May 2002 and 12 Nov 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Biopic of Mohamed Ali, who’s social stature was just as important to him as his boxing on his way to becoming the best boxer in the world

My Take on it – This is a really boring biopic that for some reason fails to work on so many levels.

Will Smith does a terrible impression of the former boxing champ and its pretty laughable the whole way through.

The film feels as if it is attempting to try and be as provocative as possible instead of realistic and intriguing and that hurts it so much.

The best part of the film is Jon Voight as sports commentator Howard Cosell who steals very scene he is in and gets the accent of the famous reporter near perfect.

The story itself jumps too often over time and instead of trying to stay focused, it’s ends up all over the place which is detrimental to the way that this story is meant to be perceived.

The film is also too long and at over two and half ours it drags along too much which makes it easier for the viewer to lose interest in everything that is going on.

They should have tried to trim it down to the two hour mark or expanded it to an even longer film which might have helped fill in so many of the gaps in the story which is sorely needed here.

Bottom Line – Pretty boring biopic that doesn’t work at all. Smith does a poor impression of Ali and the film seems more like its trying to be provocative than intriguing. Voight is the best part of the film and stands out as the famous Howard Cosell. The story is a bit too long and drags on way too much along the way.  The story jumps too often in time and doesn’t manage to stay focused enough which also hurts the way that such a film can be perceived.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Will Smith actually turned down the role of Ali. However, Ali gave a call to Will Smith and asked him to take the role, because he was the only one as good looking as him, that could play the role. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
