Brief Synopsis – Ethan Hunt must once again go off the radar in order to try and track down a criminal organization known as the Syndicate which is trying to take over the world.
My Take on it – After having watched 4 of these films, I was hoping that they would find a way to stay on track with the scope and balance of these stories to try and stay within the parameters set forth by previous Mission: Impossible films and the TV shows.
But alas, they have subsequently created a James Bond clone which loses so much of the uniqueness that this franchise has given us in the past.
The action is quite fun here but the idea to start making these storylines about globe trotting to various places instead of trying to stick to a small, yet impossible mission is what we are meant to expect, and they seem to have lost the scope of what these missions are suppose to be.
Tom Cruise seems to have overdone this role and they probably should have stopped this franchise sooner for the sake of quality, but they seem to still be able to make millions with it, so until that falters, they will keep making these films.
The action and effects are being done here on a grander level yet there is little originality in the story as one would hope to expect from a franchise like this which began so diverse and unique.
It’s nice to once again see Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and Jeremy Renner along for the ride here.
Alec Baldwin also is fine as the CIA Director trying to keep a handle on everything going on.
Bottom Line – Feels too much like a James Bond clone instead of a film depicting the IMF. The action is fun but they seem to have lost the uniqueness of stories dealing with these kind of small secluded missions that have a larger effect yet still can be seen from a smaller perspective. Cruise seems to have overdone this role a bit and they seem to be beating a dead horse to try and make the action and effects grander yet lose any originality one could expect from this franchise. Nice to once again see Pegg, Renner and Rhames back for more globe trotting missions. Baldwin is also good in his role as the CIA Director.
