Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 Nov 2018)
Brief Synopsis – An investigative reporter trying to uncover misdeeds in a science lab gets “infected” by an alien force that gives him powers beyond his belief yet must constantly fight with his alter-ego when it comes to wrong or right.
My Take on it – This is a film that I knew little about before seeing it besides what was shown in Spider-Man 3 (2007) where this character had a small role.
They do a great job keeping things entertaining with lots of explosions and action scenes yet something is sorely missing in the development of the characters and the story itself.
Unfortunately, not much feels very unique here and it seems as if lots of the storyline have been reused from other superhero tales of the past which is a bit of a shame.
The way they present the dynamic between the main character of Eddie Brock and his alter-ego Venom is done quite well even if things don’t feel as poignant as they could.
Tom Hardy is fine in the lead, but he doesn’t manage to do anything that would make him stand out in this character.
The best art of this film are the special effects because they are done so well and we get a very realistic feel fr the way that science and technology is shown within the world they created here.
Love the Stan Lee cameo (one of his last)
Bottom Line – Entertaining superhero film that doesn’t feel as unique as one would hope for. The dynamic between the main character and his alter-ego is done quite well but things seem too often to follow a typical superhero arc that has been overly used in the genre. Hardy is fine in the lead, but doesn’t do anything to really stand out. The special effects tho are amazingly done and we get a realistic feel of the science and technology that is being presented within their world.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Tom Hardy’s son Louis Thomas Hardy is a fan of Venom, and Hardy took the role to please him: “I wanted to do something my son could watch. So I did something where I bite people’s heads off.” Louis also guided his father on how to appropriately portray Brock/Venom, since Hardy didn’t know the character very well. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
