Did They Get it Right? – Best Supporting Actor – Oscars 1991

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

Tommy Lee Jones (JFK)
Harvey Keitel (Bugsy)
Ben Kingsley (Bugsy)
Michael Lerner (Barton Fink)
Jack Palance (City Slickers)

Biggest Snub:

Samuel L. Jackson – Jungle Fever

My Overall Thoughts:

This is a year with some great actors being nominated, but unfortunately most of their performances are just ok and not groundbreaking at all.  One is clearly better than the other 4 tho and was the [perceived front runner after also winning the Golden Globe.

My Rankings:

Supporting Actor

5. Michael Lerner
4. Harvey Keitel
3. Ben Kingsley
2. Tommy Lee Jones
1. Jack Palance

Movies

4. Barton FinkToo abstract for my own personal taste, yet I can understand and appreciate some of the scenes and how they were shot. Turturro is superb in the lead and his performance definitely stands out among the all, yet the abstractness of it all actually hinders this film more than helps it. The general idea to try and understand writers block along with the movie-making and writing process are shown really well in order to make things somewhat interesting even if not enjoyable enough overall.
3. BugsyGives a good impression of who Bugsy was; a dreamer and a businessman whose motivations often clashed with his colleagues. The ‘industry’ loves Beatty more than they should because this movie is far from being perfect but still has some entertaining scenes. Terrible chemistry between Beatty and Benning which is quite ironic.
2. City SlickersOne of the best movies about dealing with a mid life crisis. Gets the balance between comedy and drama perfectly right. Crystal was a superb choice for the lead because he excels in roles like this. Excellent supporting cast. Doesn’t pander to the audience and openly discusses and deals with issues that so many people can relate to.
1. JFKExcellent movie that gives so much ammunition for the conspiracy nuts out there (like me). It’s a bit one sided but still an extremely entertaining 3.5 hour movie. Amazing cast led by Costner, Jones and Pesci among others. Director Stone manages to raise enough doubt and I’m still surprised that so many documents are still classified today and that no one is demanding that they be released.

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Most Definitely!  Pretty weak year, but Palance is definitely the best of the 5 nominees and gives an amazing performance here.
