Number of Times Seen – 1 (27 Nov 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A retired judge is asked to intervene when a former friend of his refuses to accept a Congressional Medal of Honor for his service during World War II.
My Take on it – This is a Hallmark Hall of Fame film that I’ve been interested in seeing for years but never had the opportunity to finally see what it was all about.
The fact that it won Golden Globe Awards for both Best TV movie and Best Actor in a TV movie for star James Garner made it even more exciting to see what this was all about.
They manage to tell a great story that even nearly 30 years after it was made still resonates because it is done so well.
Both Garner and co-star Bill Cobbs give great performances that are quite emotional throughout.
They both make these characters feel quite realistic and we can easy believe that they went through the things they describe throughout the movie.
THis story manages to touch on numerous topics that all quite diverse yet they find a way to tie them all together in a nice package that doesn’t feel forced at all.
They deal with reconciling with events of the past, racism during World War II, terminal illness, retirement, lost love and of course found love even at a late part in ones life.
They manage to present the story in a very subtle fashion and we get a clear idea of the kind of emotional roller coaster these characters are required to go through in order to try and resolve these issues.
Bottom Line – Great story that resonates so well throughout largely due to the great performances by Garner and Cobbs who are both superb and realistic in their roles. The story touches upon numerous issues that involve dealing with the past, racism and of course lost and found love. The story is all presented very subtly and we get a clear idea of what these characters are going through. Recommended!
