Brief Synopsis – After his wife mysteriously disappears a teacher is accused of her murder despite there not being a body.

My Take on it – This is a film that I thoroughly enjoyed the first time I saw it 4 years ago and just enough time has passed that I no longer recalled the entire movie so I was able to view it and still be surprised along the way.

This is an excellent film that is done near perfectly and is captivating throughout its 2 and half hour runtime.

Director David Fincher is able to pull the viewer in from the very first scene and holds on very tightly until the final frame of the film.

The cast is superb and Ben Affleck is perfectly cast in the lead role.

Unfortunately, as great as Affleck is, he is outshone throughout the film by Rosamund Pike who delivers her finest acting performance of her career (so far).

She is able to show both her own acting range and the range of the character with this excellent performance.

She was very deserving of her Oscar nomination for Best Actress for this performance but ended up losing to Julianne Moore in Still Alice (2014).

The story itself moves along at an amazing pace and they manage to throw in so many shocking twists and turns throughout that they keep the viewer constantly guessing as to what is really going on as things keep changing along the way.

Excellent thriller!

Bottom Line – Excellent film that is done almost perfectly. Fincher manages to pull the viewer in from the very start and doesn’t let go until the very last frame. Amazing cast led by Affleck who fits the main character so well. As great as he is here though, he is outshone throughout by Pike who delivers the best performance of her career because she is able to show such amazing range with her character.  She was deservingly nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for this role but was beaten by Moore for her performance in Still Alice (2014). The story moves along at a great pace and manages to throw in so many shocking twists and turns along the way that keep the viewer constantly guessing as to what is truly transpiring. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Ben Affleck postponed directing Live By Night (2016) in order to work on this film with David Fincher, even stating, “He’s the only director I’ve met who can do everybody else’s job better than they could.” On-set one day, Affleck changed the lens setting on a camera an almost indiscernible amount, betting a crew member that Fincher wouldn’t notice. Affleck lost the bet as Fincher brought up, “Why does the camera look a little dim?” (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10) (no change from original review)
