Number of Times Seen – At least twice (23 Dec 2001 and 10 Dec 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A single woman unhappy with her life gets a chance to see what her life would have been like had she married the man of her dreams years earlier.
My Take on it – As a fan of “what if?” stories, I recalled loving this film when I first saw it years ago.
We all reach points in our lives where we wonder what could have been had we made a certain choice, and this genre gives us all a chance to explore those ideas.
The overall premise of this film has been done before and unfortunately for this story, films like Sliding Doors (1998) and The Family Man (2000) present things much better than they are able to do here.
Rachel Griffiths tho is great in the lead and in able to truly shine in the dual personas presented to us.
She is able to connect quite well with both singlehood and parenthood and we can believe that either life for her could be plausible.
They chose to show the parallel universe in an interesting fashion yet it’s a bit frustrating throughout that they don’t really give us much of a clue as to how or why this is happening.
Certain aspects of the story become far too predictable and it would have been nicer to see some original or unique ideas used here as well.
The best part of this film is the fact that they don’t seem to present things as a dream and that makes things much more tangible for the viewer to take it all in.
Bottom Line – Interesting idea that unfortunately has been done much better before. Griffiths actually does a great job in the lead and manages to present both of her “personas” quite plausibly. The parallel universe idea is done in an interesting fashion but the lack of any explanation as to why things happened was a bit frustration throughout. Parts of the story are a bit too predictable and would have been more engaging hd they been more unique or original.
