Millennium (1989)

“We scientists should get out of the lab more often; we might learn something! ” – Dr. Arnold Mayer

Number of Times Seen – At least twice (Cable in the 90’s and 9 Dec 2018)

Brief Synopsis – An NTSB investigator tries to uncover a mystery of a plane crash after he meets a mysterious woman who seems to have had some effect on the crash.

My Take on it – As a fan of time travel, I’ve always had a soft spot for films like this one.

I recall seeing it at least once on cable back when it came out, but didn’t recall much about it besides the overall premise.

The premise is actually quite interesting and has so much potential but unfortunately, the way it is presented just doesn’t work well enough.

The idea of taking people moments before their death into the future in order to help society is a great idea but they fail to do enough with the idea here besides talk about it in general.

The scenes that take place in the future are too strange and they are not helped by the poor special effects used.

The time travel aspects of this film are quite interesting and I really liked how they present the idea of paradoxes even if some of it is done in an over the top fashion.

This is the kind of film that I think could potentially be remade with better effects now and a slightly updated script and it would have the potential to be much more compelling and intriguing than the somewhat lackluster way it was done thirty years ago.

Bottom Line – Interesting premise that just doesn’t work as well as it could.  The way that the future is presented feels too strange and the special effects are done quite poorly. Liked the time travel aspects of the film and the way that they present paradoxes.  This is a film that could be remade with modern effects and work much better.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The outdoor set used for the 747 crash site was so convincing that pilots landing at Toronto Airport were radioing in what they thought was a recent airplane crash. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
