Star! (1968)

“Close personal relationships are bloody difficult, my darling but they do get easier with time. Loneliness gets harder.” – Noel Coward

Number of Times Seen – 1 (18 Dec 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Biographical musical of the life of singer Gertrude Lawrence on and off the stage.

My Take on it – This is a film that I had never heard of before coming across it.

I have always been a fan of Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music (1965) and in Mary Poppins (1964) and had high hopes that she would be able to give another great music performance with this role.

Unfortunately, Andrews feels quite miscast in this role and even her angelic voice can’t help her seem right for the part because we can’t care about her character at all.

The story of this film comes across as being quite boring and tedious and isn’t enjoyable at all and is quite a chore to get through.

The one bright spot in this film is Daniel Massey’s performance as Noel Coward.

He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor fr this role and that probably has much to do with the fact that he supposedly does a spot on impression of Coward.

The music and songs aren’t very memorable or enjoyable enough and doesn’t succeed in keeping things interesting enough.

The film is a bit too long and 160 minute run time is a real chore to get through.

Perhaps if the film was shorter it might have worked better, but I doubt that even that could have made this more enjoyable.

Bottom Line – Extremely boring and tedious biography that isn’t enjoyable at all. Andrews feels wrong in the lead and never manages to make us care about he character at all. Massey is the one bright note here as Coward and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for this portrayal.  The music isn’t enjoyable enough and fails to keep things engaging.  The film is much too long and might have been better if it had been shorter even though that is also a gamble because it would probably be quite hard making this film enjoyable.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Daniel Massey plays Noël Coward, his own godfather. Massey made his film debut as a young boy, playing Noel Coward’s son in the wartime drama, In Which We Serve (1942). (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
