Tnx Maddy for letting me take part!
Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Dec 2018)
Brief Synopsis – After suffering a nervous breakdown, a former priest becomes a tour guide but still must battle his demons as he is averse to both women and alcohol.
My Take on it – This an interesting idea for a film given the fact that it takes a character who is use to making big speeches and makes him a tour guide due to his own personal weaknesses.
His attempts to try and overcome his vices are to no avail and he once again finds himself in some precarious situations.
Unfortunately, much of this films story is too over the top and takes away from the impact of it all.
Tennessee Williams is a great playwright and the dialogue is fiery here but it feels much too outrageous which takes away from keeping things interesting.
The cats is great with Richard Burton, Ava Gardner and Deborah Kerr in key roles.
Gardner is the standout among the three since her character feels the most unique and exotic of the three.
The fact that the film is a bit over the top takes away from their performances tho.
The cinematography is quite beautiful to look at here and they have some great shots of the Mexican coastline along with the beaches which adds a lot to the backdrop of this story.
Bottom Line – Interesting idea for a story but it gets too much over the top too often along the way. Williams is a great playwright but this film’s dialogue is too much and loses so much of its impact along the way. Great cast with Burton, Gardner and Kerr all giving nice performances even if the story is a bit too much. The cinematography of the Mexican coast is beautiful to look at and there are some great shots of the sea and the coastline as the backdrop for this story.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Prior to shooting, in order to defuse the tensions of the isolated location they were working in, John Huston made each lead actor a gold-encrusted pistol with bullets — each bullet engraved with one of the other actors’ names. This way, when the actors wanted to kill one another, they could use the designated bullet. This amused everyone, and proved successful. No problems arose among the cast. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
