Replicas (2018)

“Do you really believe that? That’s all I am? Your children? Just pathways, electrical signals and chemistry? You have kids that love you and a wife that adores you and we have a scientist.” – Mona

Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 Dec 2018)

Brief Synopsis – After a freak accident, a scientist secretly creates clones of his family members.

My Take on it – This is a film that has a great premise that deals with some very interesting questions about life and science.

They manage to bring up many ethical and moral issues that this kind of subject matter can be connected to and allows us to explore things with the characters as the story moves forward.

The story itself is presented in quite a plausible fashion based on the way that they explain the science of it all.

The characters sometimes need to make some very difficult decisions and they do a nice job making us feel how gut retching these choices must be for them.

We can sympathize quite easily with everything they must do and that helps make this film more personal.

The final act of the film is a bit too formulaic and they turn things into a typical sci-fi thriller but they add a few nice and clever twists that help make things more unique.

Keeanu Revees is great in the lead and I could really understand his character and his motivations.

This film is far from perfect and there are some gaping plot holes which hurt things slightly yet it still is quite enjoyable to watch unfold.

Bottom Line – Interesting premise that is helped by plausible science. The story works quite well throughout and Reeves plays the lead in a realistic fashion. Some of the decisions that the characters need to make are gut retching and it’s easy to sympathize with them because we can feel for everything they must do. The last act of this film tuns things into a typical modern sci-fi/thriller which takes away from the story a bit yet, they add some clever bits in to it that make it more unique.  There are some pretty big plot holes in this film which hurts things slightly. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The story and screenplay for REPLICAS was developed at Keanu Reeves and Stephen Hamel’s production company Company Films. Hamel writes the majority of all the stories produced there. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
