Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)

“It all starts with a simple choice. ” – Billy Lee

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Jan 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A group of strangers show up at a motel on the California/Nevada border on a story night during the late 1960’s and realize that something strange is going on.

My Take on it – This is a film that I knew nothing about before choosing to watch it and was very pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

This is such a gripping and thrilling film and it works so well because it constantly surprises along the way even when the viewer keeps believing that the previous surprise was the twist in the story.

The characters in the film are developed really well and each of them are built up so complexly that we truly know nothing about them as they keep revealing information that somewhat changes what we previously knew about them.

The choice to tell this story in chapters works really well because it allows us to gather new information on each character as things move along and things get more and more interesting as we learn more and more about who these people are.

The cast is superb and the choice to tell a story where it isn’t clearly defined as to who is the lead works really well in keeping this as an ensemble story where we never know which characters can be trusted or for that matter who we should care about.

The choice to use known actors in many of the roles also helps add to the enjoyment of this film because they each bring so much to these mysterious characters who are constantly transforming as the story moves forward.

This is such an original and unique idea and stays interesting and engaging throughout because we want to know and understand who these people each are and what is truly happening to them.

This film must have been so much fun to make because it feels like a new writer/director has found an intriguing way to tell this kind of crime story.

Lets hope we get some more unique stories like this from Writer/director Drew Goddard.

Bottom Line – Great thriller that is told so well because it manages to keep surprising over and over despite the fact that we keep thinking that the previous surprise was enough. The characters are all complex and the choice to tell this story in chapters works to help develop each of them as the story moves along. The cast is superb and the fact that none of them are clearly defined as the lead helps make this such an ensemble storyline where we don’t know who to trust or even care about.  They must have had so much fun making this film because it’s so unique and is enjoyable and gripping the whole way through. Excellent cast helps make this such an enjoyable thriller especially since the story feels so original and unique. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Drew Goddard’s process of selling the script was under heavy secrecy, only sending it to top studio execs. Potential buyers had to read it on a tablet and then return it when finished.  (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10)
