Blindspotting (2018)

“You are a convicted felon, Mr. Hoskins. You are now that until proven otherwise. Prove otherwise at all times.” – James

Number of Times Seen – 1 (9 Jan 2019)

Brief Synopsis –A man with 3 days left to his probation tries to stay out of trouble despite hanging around with friends who could potentially do much damage and cause him to break his probation.

My Take on it – This is a film that I knew nothing about before watching it besides the fact that I saw that it was being given so much hype by other bloggers about it being one of the best films of the year.

I was sorely disappointed to see that that is far from the case.

The overall theme of the story is actually quite interesting yet the way that they chose to present things leaves so much lacking and fails to keep things interesting throughout.

The characters created here feel much too cliched and their actions seem far too predictable instead of trying to find a way to make things more unique.

The main character’s dilemma is actually quite intriguing yet the way that they decided to show his indecision in these matter doesn’t manage to keep things grounded enough and takes so much away from being able to enjoy this film on a deeper level.

This is the kind of story that might have worked much better if it had been presented as a poignant and deep drama instead of trying too hard to inject bouts of humor every now and again in order to lighten the situations.

Bottom Line – Overall theme that sounds interesting yet is presented much to poorly to be effective. The characters are much too cliched and everything they do is quite predictable throughout. The dilemma of the main character is plausible yet due to the way that they show how he mulls over his decisions things just don’t work at all in keeping things grounded and feeling realistic enough. This might have worked better if they had stuck to making it a pure drama instead of trying to hard to lighten things with too much humor along the way.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The “kill a hipster save your hood” shirt that Miles receives refers to a song by rapper, George Watsky. Watsky himself has a cameo in the movie as the employee at the Kwikway (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (4/10)

  1. I’m sorely disappointed in your disappointment as I thought that this WAS one of the best films of the year – and I saw 115 movies in 2018. All movies released in 2018.My son,who saw 121 – agrees with me.

    • I’ve only seen 86 (so far), but I just couldn’t connect with this story or the characters at all. I really wanted to enjoy it more especially base don all that I’ve heard about it, but it just didn’t do it for me.

Maye u can explain to me why you think it was one of the best of the year.
