Countdown to 5K! – #60 – At First Sight (1999)

This is my 4985th Review

Original Rating prediction – 7/10

“Limbo is like New Jersey. You can see all the good stuff, you just have to get there.” – Phil

Number of Times Seen – 1 (14 Feb 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A blind man must decide whether to have surgery that could potentially give him back his sight.

My Take on it – This is a film that actually surprised me that I had never seen because I had heard of it mainly because it was part of Val KIlmer’s attempt to revive his career.

Unfortunately, despite having an interesting premise, this film doesn’t work at all.

Kilmer is ineffective in the lead and he lacks any kind of chemistry with co-star Mira Sorvino despite the fact that they want us to believe that they fall in love over the course of the film.

This takes so much away from the story because it doesn’t come across as genuine that these two would fall in love since the love story aspects of the film feel much too rushed and doesn’t allow their relationship to blossom properly.

The overall premise actually feels a bit too science fiction-y even though I am aware that this is partially based on a real case.

The irony of it all is that in the nearly twenty years since this film came out, there have been so many scientific advancements made in so many fields that it now seems even more plausible that when this film was made.

Bottom Line – Interesting idea that doesn’t work as well as one would hope. Kilmer is pretty ineffectiv ein the lead and it seems humorous part of the time that we was cast in this role.  He and Sorvino have terrible chemistry together and that hurts this film a lot. The overall premise seems more like a science fiction story than reality yet with the many advances in science, it seems quiet plausible. The love story aspect of the film isn’t given enough room to develop and much of it seems too rushed which takes away from the believability of it.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Virgil (Val Kilmer) says he is blind as a bat. He played Batman a few years before this one. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
