Forced Films 2019 – #2 – Tony’s 1st Pick – F For Fake (1973)

This is the second of 10 films that I was “forced” to watch by my fellow bloggers who participated in my 4800th review Contest last December.  This movie was the 1st of 2 films chosen by Jay of Life Vs. Film

Tnx for the suggestion.  Let’s see what I thought of it….

“I started at the top and have been working my way down ever since. ” – Orson Welles

Number of Times Seen – 1 (19 Feb 2019)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary about a group of people living on a small island who use forgery and subterfuge to make themselves rich.

My Take on it – This is a film that I had never even heard of before Tony suggested that I watch it.

Orson Welles was always a very eccentric film maker and the fact that he made this kind of film isn’t so surprising due to his own background dealing with deceit and deception of the masses; his War of the World broadcast in 1936.

His choice to narrate the film itself and play”host” works quite well and we get a clear picture through his descriptions of the ways some people use their talents in order to try and fool others.

This film is able to remain fascinating the entire time by the use of some great ploys that they are able to utilize along the way to create their own deceptions and twists.

Some of these twosts can be seen miles away (as long as you pay close attention) and others come at you very stealthily which helps make things enjoyable.

Bottom Line – Quite fascinating the way that this film shows how some people use their talents in order to deceive others.   Welles is the perfect choice to narrate this film because of his own background with deception with his War of the Worlds broadcast 40 years before this film was made.  They are able to keep this film interesting throughout with the help of both deception and twists of their own; some can be seen miles away and some still manage to surprise.   Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Welles filmed a trailer that lasted for nine minutes and featured several shots of a topless Oja Kodar. The trailer was rejected by the US distributors. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
