The Scorpion King (2002)

“Let me tell you, after a hard day of looting and pillaging, there is no greater city than Gomorrah… except maybe Sodom. ” – Arpid

Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Feb 2019)

Brief Synopsis – An Akkadian warrior tries to stop an evil army from taking over his homeland.

My Take on it –This is a film that I’ve been avoiding seeing ever since it came out 17 years ago.

The fact that Darren of Movie Reviews 101 chose it for next month’s Franchise MOTM at the LAMB made me take the plunge especially since this is the first of the 5 films in the series that I have now committed myself to watching within the next week or so.

This is a film that probably should never have been made especially from an entertainment perspective.

The story itself is quite boring and remains uninteresting throughout its 90 minute run time.

The choice to have the The Rock and Michael Duncan Clarke appear in prominent roles in this film would normally make me think that it would be more interesting but even the addition of them doesn’t help at all.

This film has some fun fight scenes, but the plot seems quite silly and has nothing to really offer.

Even the casting of Kelly Hu doesn’t help at all.

The plot makes little sense and feels extremely bloated the entire time.

The problem here is that The Scorpion King might be an interesting character in a supporting role (like in The Mummy Returns (2001), but he cannot sustain a lead role in one movie, let alone 5. 😦

If this film is the best of the series, I’m in for a lot of pain…

Bottom Line – Terrible film that is so boring and uninteresting. Having The Rock and Michael Clarke Duncan in it should theoretically make it more enjoyable, but besides the various fight scenes, this film has absolutely nothing to offer.  Even the addition of Kelly Hu doesn’t manage to make this any more enjoyable and the plot seems completely bloated the entire time. The character of The Scorpion King, might have been an interesting one as a side character, but as the lead, he’s a completely dud.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Dwayne Johnson’s $5.5 million salary made the Guinness Book Of Records for the highest salary for a first-time leading man. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
