Executive Decision (1996)

“I hope there’s a good movie on this flight.” – Rat

Number of Times Seen – Between 3-5 times (Theater in ’96, video, cable and 3 Mar 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A group of terrorists take over a commercial airliner in order to force the release of their terrorist leader from an American jail and only a team of elite commando can try and save the passengers.

My Take on it – This is a great action film that I’ve enjoyed watching every time that I’ve had the opportunity to see it.

The world has changed a lot ever since this was made 23 years ago and there is little chance that a film like this would have been made after the events of 9/11.

Kurt Russell does a great job in the lead role and plays the part of a Jack Ryan doppelganger quite well.

Loved seeing Steven Seagal in this film in a role that is quite important yet not the focal point of the story like he was accustomed to being up until this film was made.

It’s no secret that ever since 9/11, we now know that many of the scenarios shown here are quite plausible and it’s interesting to think about the fact that this film has become much more relevant to the world now than it probably was when it was made back in ’96.

It also feels much more poignant now due to the events of 9/11.

This movie does a great job showing the various sides of such a story and they manage to do a wonderful job keeping things balanced between the various factions so that we can get a very clear picture of everything that occurs in this film.

Loved seeing so many talented actors in many of the supporting roles because it also helps make the story feel even more realistic just with their presence.

Bottom Line – Great action film that is so much fun to watch especially since the world has changed so much since this film was made.  Russell is great in the lead and I loved seeing Seagal take part in this film even if he isn’t the main focus.  As we all know, much of the scenarios described here are plausible and this film is much more poignant after 9/11 than it ever could have been beforehand. They do a great job showing the various sides of this story and they keep things balanced between the various factions involved in this situation. The supporting cast is also great because we get so many talented actors playing somewhat minor roles yet still helping to make this story feel so realistic throughout. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film portrays the hijacking of a plane to be used in a terrorist attack, much like the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The flight number is 343, which is the exact number of firefighters killed on September 11th. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
