Number of Times Seen – at least twice (cable in the 80’s and 12 Mar 2019)
Brief Synopsis – A female Olympic medal winner is mistakenly hired to coach a high school basketball team and must prove she is truly worthy of the job.
My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing on cable in the 80’s but didn’t remember much about it.
The overall premise is actually quite interesting but they ruin it by adding a completely extraneous and silly romance to the story which bogs things down because it isn’t at all necessary in order to tell this kind of story.
Cathy Lee Crosby is fine in the lead role and show how great an actress she can be especially when her character is able to show an assertive stance to caching a boy’s high school basketball team.
It was actually quite humorous seeing Michael Biehn (in his film debut) as a high schooler and the fact that his character has a romance with his basketball coach and it feels a bit too creepy and in some ways very far fetched.
This is a film that feels very unbalanced because it does have something interesting to say about equal rights and how it’s possible to have a female coach who can be effective, but the way that they show the jail-bait romance takes away so much from the premise and ruins any impact that the rest of the story could potentially have.
Bottom Line – Interesting idea that bogged down with a silly and extraneous love story. Crosby does a nice job with the role and shows that she can be a great actress with her assertive stance about coaching. Funny seeing Biehn as a teenager but the romance between his character and Crosby’s seems a bit to creepy and far fetched. Has some interesting scenes, but overall, this film doesn’t have much to offer.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Quentin Tarantino owns a 35mm copy of this film. (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy (4/10)
