Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 Mar 2019)
Brief Synopsis – A young baseball prospect from the Dominican Republic tries to make a name for himself and be hired as a player for professional baseball in the US.
My Take on it – As a fan of the sport of baseball, I always love seeing movies about the sport especially when I get the opportunity to see things from a different perspective than previously.
This is a film that gives us the viewpoint of a minority prospect from the Dominican Republic and we get to see how the hopes and dreams of a young man with an impoverished background can propel him forward as he tries to make a name and career for himself in the US.
They do a nice job showing the various hurdles that befall this character along his path for success in both baseball and in life itself.
They are able to have the story play out in a very realistic fashion and that helps make the story and arc taken seem even more genuine and plausible.
The way that they show the various difficulties faced by these kind of young prospects as they strive to become a part of the Major League Baseball system is done extremely well because we get to see that it has little to do with one’s nationality as it primarily focuses on the idea of having only the most talented players being able to make the transition to becoming a professional.
Bottom Line – Interesting and unique look at the life of a baseball prospect from the Caribbean. The film shows how this character deals with the various hurdles along the way both in baseball and in life itself. The story plays out in a pretty realistic fashion and we can believe that the path that the story takes is a genuine one. They are able to show the difficulties of becoming a part of a major league team regardless of one’s nationality or background since they are just seeking the most talented players. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Some of the last names of the Swing of the Quad Cities players in the film were those of actual players on the team. However, they were not portrayed by the real Swing players. During filming, the real players were still in their regular season and then post-season. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
