The Sixties (2014)

“We chose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things. Not because they are easy but because they are hard.” – John F. Kennedy

Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 Mar 2019)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary that explores the major events that helped shape the world during the decade of the 1960’s.

My Take on it – This is a mini-series that I had never heard of beforehand and was quite interested in watching it since as a fan of history, I was curious to see how they would present such a pivotal decade in a coherent way.

The way that this film is set up works really well because they are able to give a comprehensive exploration of ten major events or themes that occurred during the 60’s in a succinct way that we can get a great understanding of how these events helped shaped the world for years to come.

Loved the way that despite the fact that many of the events depicted correspond with one another they manage to keep each one independent in the way they discuss things which helps give the viewer an even more comprehensive look at each one of the themes individually.

The way that they chose to do the various interviews is also great since they give us a mix of two very contrasting kind of populations they give us their opinions and analysis of the various themes.

On the one hand, we get interviews with some of the people (or their offspring) who helped shape the events of the day and at the same time, we get other interviews with the actual people who’s lives were shaped by these events.

The video footage used here is spectacular to watch because of the way that they edit it all together so nicely since that helps us get a great representative sampling of how each of these various events and themes evolved over the course of this 10 year period.

After watching this, I learned that they made another 4 documentaries about the decades of the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s and I cant wait to see what they do with those!

Bottom Line – Great idea that works quite well because it is able to take the time to explore each of the 10 events in a very impressive way.  Some of the various events correspond with one another, but they do an amazing job sticking to each theme from start to finish in order to give the viewer a very comprehensive look at each events on its own. The interviews are great because, on the one hand, they allow us to hear the opinions of some of the people who themselves shaped the events describes and on the other hand, we get the opinions of some of the people who’s lives were shaped by these said events.  The footage obtained for this entire series is superbly edited together in order to help give us such a great representative sampling of how each of them themes developed during the course of those 10 pivotal years. Highly Recommended!
