Parental Guidance (2012)

“Eggless egg salad, how am I gonna know it when I see it?” – Artie Decker

Number of Times Seen – Twice (28 Mar 2013 and 27 Mar 2019)

Brief Synopsis – After their daughter and son-in-law take an unexpected work related business trip, a pair of grandparents must find a way to successfully watch their 3 grandchildren.

My Take on it – As a parent, I always have been conflicted as to which is the best way to raise a child.

The method that our parents and grandparents used was supposedly very successful back in the day, but in this modern world, things have changed so much due to so many new methods being created that it’s difficult to know what is right or wrong in these areas.

This film does a great job of mixing together the various methods and showing the differences between the ways of the past and the present in these matters.

Billy Crystal and Bette Midler are superb in the lead roles here and manage to keep things fun, enjoyable and poignant throughout.

The film does a fine job spotlighting the various pros and cons of the different methods of parenting while still keeping things very light and enjoyable in a comfortable environment from start to finish.

Marisa Tomei and Tom Everett Scott are both a bit underused here in the roles of the parents, yet that isn’t always a bad thing since it helps spotlight the characters played by Crystal and Midler who should stay the focus.

Bottom Line – Very fun film that is able to show the various differences between child rearing of the past and child rearing of the present. Crystal is superb in the lead and is still able to keep things funny throughout.  The film is able to spotlight the pro’s and cons of both methods of parenting while still keeping things in a very light and enjoyable environment throughout. Tomei and Everett Scott are a bit underused here, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing since Crystal and Midler are truly the characters who should be focused upon here.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The idea for the film came from a real life experience for Billy Crystal when he and his wife looked after their grandchildren for a weekend. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
