Genre Guesstimation – The Inbetweeners Movie (2011)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s Genre has been chosen by Allie of Often Off Topic and we will be reviewing our favorite British Comedies

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of April by sending them to funnyallie@movierob.net

Try to think out of the box! Great choice Allie!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of British Comedies.

“This isn’t The Dead Poets Society and I am not that bloke on bbc2 keeps getting kids to sing in choirs. I especially don’t want to hear how well you are settling down at uni or how much growing up you have done in the past 12 months. At best I am ambivalent towards most of you, but some of you I actively dislike, for no other reason than your poor personal hygiene or your irritating personalities. I hope I have made myself clear on this point and in case any of you think I am joking, I am not. I assure you, once my legal obligation to look after you best interests is removed, I can be one truly nasty f*cker. Good luck with the rest of your lives and try not to kill anyone, it reflects very badly on all of us here. ” – Mr. Gilbert

Number of Times Seen – 1 (4 Apr 2019)

Brief Synopsis – After graduating high-school, four friends travel to Crete for their summer vacation with the hopes of finding love.

My Take on it – I decided that in order to make my guest choices of the Genre for the Genre Grandeur series more personal (and expand my own personal horizons of these genres), I will take a recommendation from my guest for a film to watch for this Genre Guesstimation series.

This movie was Allie’s choice for me to watch.

I had never even heard of this film beforehand and wasn’t even aware that it was a continuation of a long running British TV show.

I found this film quite unfunny and there wasn’t any point where things that happened felt humorous in any way.

The fact that I am unfamiliar with the TV show this is based on might have a lot to do with why I didn’t enjoy this film.

Not knowing the characters beforehand hurts this film because I’m sure that their back stories would help enlighten viewers to many of the things that happen here.

The characters feel quite hollow and in many instances boring since they lack any kind of real push to do something worth while.

The characters cause much trouble with their antics and some of the situations they find themselves in feel quite extreme.

Unfortunately they mostly come across as unfunny and instead seem pretty annoying.

This is a movie that feels as if it wants to try and cash in on the success of the American Pie series or the teen sex comedies of the 80’s, yet fails miserably while trying to do so.

Bottom Line – Terrible film that doesn’t manage to be funny at all. The fact that I am unfamiliar with the TV series might have a lot to do with that since I don’t know the back stories of these characters and found most of them tedious.  The antics that these characters create and encounter along the way are a bit extreme and fails to be funny since they mostly come across as being quite annoying.  This film feels as if it is trying to duplicate the success of the American Pie series, but they fail miserably at doing so.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When the boys are in the coach on the way to the hotel there is another group of lads singing a “We Love You Burnley” football chant. When they get to the hotel the man they meet clearly has a Blackburn Rovers tattoo. The two Northern teams have one of the most violent and longest running rivalries of the game. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not even close.  This film isn’t very funny and seems like one needs to be a fan of the TV show in order to fully appreciate the story here.

Rating – Razzie Worthy (4/10)

  1. I did wonder what your take on this would be. The Inbetweeners was always a bit love it or hate it when it was just a TV Show. I loved the first movie but thought the sequel was awful. Thanks for giving it a go!

  2. I find the TV series funny but not the film. The characters are amusing in short bursts but when they are given a longer run time it becomes abundantly obvious that they have no redeemable features and are horrible human beings.
