Ambush at Cimarron Pass (1958)

“A man’s gotta take a lot of things he doesn’t bargain for Prescott. Maybe that’s what makes him a man.” – Sgt. Matt Blake

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Apr 2019)

Brief Synopsis – Two years after the end of the Civil War, an Army patrol in Apache territory must work together with a group of ex-confederate soldiers in order to survive.

My Take on it – This is a film that I had never heard of until I started to look deeply into Clint Eastwood’s filmography and came across this small film where he doesn’t even play the main character.

This is a very mediocre western and it fails to add anything new to the genre dealing with the early days of the Old West not long after the end of the Civil War.

They tell the story in a pretty competent fashion but nothing in the plot helps make it truly stand out among the hundreds or thousands of films that fit into this genre.

It was nice seeing Eastwood in a supporting role as opposed to being the lead like he has been throughout most of his career.

He is far from the hero (or even anti-hero) here and it’s quite humorous seeing him play such a part in a film.

The film has a few nice fight scenes and they show them in the standard way without the attempt to try and do anything in a more fresh or unique way which in turn keeps this film feeling the same way.

Bottom Line – Mediocre western that doesn’t manage to really give anything new to the genre. The story is told in a competent fashion yet it fails to really do anything that makes it stand out among the many other films in the genre.  Nice seeing Eastwood in a small yet significant role at the beginning of his film career even if it is quite different from the kind of roles we are use to seeing him portray.  The fight scenes are shown in the usual way without making this film feel fresh or unique in any way.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Clint Eastwood reportedly described this film as “probably the lousiest western ever made.” (From IMDB)

Rating – ??? Worthy (?/10)
