Foreman (2017)

“I can’t understand how another man would ball up his fist, put on gloves and try and knock another man unconscious. I just can’t see it. I don’t understand how I did it.  I couldn’t do that again.” – George Foreman

Number of Times Seen – 1 (8 Apr 2019)

Brief Synopsis – Biography about the only man to win the title of Heavyweight Champion of the word twice with a break of 2 decades between his wins.

My Take on it – This is a film that I’ve been interested in seeing for quite a while especially since I’m familiar with the film When We Were Kings (1996) which depicts the fight between Foreman and Ali.

They do a very nice job with this documentary as they show how George Foreman was able to change his persona and fighting style over the decades in order to achieve things that no other man has been able to do especially at his age.

Really liked the way that this film decides to show the progression of his career and accomplishments largely via interviews with various sports and boxing personalities along with some of his contenders over the years since they are all quite familiar with the rises and falls of this great man over his career as a professional boxer.

I must admit that I’m not the biggest fan of the pugilistic sport, but I still found this film to be quiet eye opening in the way that they show the career arc that Foreman had over the years.

The fact that he also had a spiritual awakening during the intervening years between his championship wins also says much about the abilities of this man who has been a staple in his sport for over 5 decades.

Bottom Line – Fascinating documentary about a man who was able to change the his persona over the course of his career.  Liked the way that the film shows his accomplishments with lots of interviews with the various sports personalities and contenders that he was acquainted with along his rise and fall over the years. His spiritual changes are also quite an accomplishment.  As someone who isn’t that much of a fan of the sport of pugilism, this film was quite eye opening in the way that it explains the progression of his career in the sport over more than 50 years. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Foreman came back from retirement, he argued that his success was due to his healthy eating. He was approached by Salton, Inc., which was looking for a spokesperson for its fat-reducing grill. As of 2009, the George Foreman Grill has sold over 100 million units. (From Wikipedia)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
